Downfall of Adam Britton: From Animal Lover to Dog Torturer

Sexual predatorsTrue Crime

Adam Britton was a once celebrated as a leading expert on crocodiles and a committed conservationist. However, beneath his meticulously cultivated public persona, a sinister truth emerged. Far from being the protector of animals he portrayed himself as, Britton engaged in some of the most appalling acts of animal cruelty ever documented. His heinous actions, which involved the torture and killing of numerous dogs, have not only shattered his reputation but also left a lasting impact on those who once admired him. The revelations of his vile deeds have permanently tarnished his legacy and cast a dark shadow over his contributions to zoology and conservation.

Early Life

Adam Robert Corden Britton was born in 1971 in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. He attended Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield.

He was initially interested in veterinary science but ultimately pursued a career in zoology. In one of his blog posts, Britton said that the three key people who inspired him to become a zoologist were his mother who loved nature, his biology teacher, and renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough, whom he looked up to as a role model.

After leaving school, Britton completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Leeds in 1992, and then earned his PhD in Zoology from the University of Bristol in 1996, focusing his research on the hunting methods of bats.

However, Britton’s true aspiration was to leave the UK and study crocodiles. He had been captivated by these reptiles since childhood and wanted to improve the increasingly strained relationship between humans and crocodiles. So in 1996, at the age of 25, Britton travelled to the remote Northern Territory of Australia, home to the world’s largest population of saltwater crocodiles, and made the country his new home.

Australia’s Crocodile Expert

After relocating to the Northern Territory, the enthusiastic Britton commenced work as a Senior Researcher at Crocodylus Park, a small zoo and research facility. He soon established himself as a leading global expert on crocodiles, with his research gaining international recognition. In 1998, Britton made worldwide headlines when he discovered that crocodile blood possesses potent antibiotic properties, a finding with significant medical implications. He later joined Charles Darwin University as a research associate.

Britton met his wife Erin, who was a biologist and wildlife ranger. They lived in a two-and-a-half-acre estate situated in McMinns Lagoon, just outside Darwin. In 2006, Britton left Crocodylus Park and co-founded a crocodile research and consulting business called Big Gecko, which he established with his wife. Britton had established himself as a leading authority on crocodile behaviour, and he kept saltwater crocodiles as pets on his property, selling footage of them to television and film producers. This made Britton’s home a popular filming location for crews capturing crocodile behaviours that are difficult to film in the wild. Big Gecko would assist with training handlers and supporting film crews.

Erin, Adam, & David Attenborough

Over the years, Britton collaborated with major media outlets like BBC and National Geographic. He was a featured expert on the Discovery Channel’s ‘Animal Face-Off’ program, and Erin even met Prince Harry when he visited Australia in 2015 and helped rescue a crocodile from a trap. Britton’s expertise was also sought internationally, as he helped measure Lolong, the world’s longest captive crocodile in the Philippines in 2011, and accompanied TV host Anderson Cooper on a crocodile dive in Botswana for a ’60 Minutes’ episode in 2016.

Britton worked with celebrities such as Bear Grylls, and even hosted his idol, Sir David Attenborough, who filmed part of the ‘Life in Cold Blood’ docuseries on Britton’s property. Britton built a specialized enclosure for his pet crocodile Smaug, which allowed for groundbreaking footage of crocodiles mating to be captured.

“If you’ve ever seen an underwater shot of a saltwater crocodile, there’s a good chance it’s Smaug”, Britton told the NT News in 2018.

While Britton preached about the need for greater respect for crocodiles, he also revelled in the spotlight. He was known for self-promotion, frequently updating his social media with photos of his crocodiles and media appearances, indicating a desire for attention.

Colleagues who initially saw him as shy but pleasant would later describe him as arrogant and an anti-social odd man out. John Pomeroy, who organised research field work for Crocodylus Park said: “He was quite up himself… so he wasn’t a particularly popular person, but he was reasonably good at his job“.

The founder of Crocodylus Park, Professor Webb, alleged that Britton was an egotist who passed much of the work of the team off as his own. Webb also accused him of just wanting to get on the news. Britton’s former colleague, Brandon Sideleau, also accused Britton of taking credit for the crocodilian attack database they had founded in 2013 called CrocBITE. Sideleau claimed Britton never actually contributed to it but merely paid for the website domain.

Despite these concerns about Britton’s narcissistic tendencies, those who knew him were still shocked to learn about his crimes. While a few noted fleeting moments where he seemed to lack empathy, there was no indication that he was violent or cruel. And there was certainly no indication of the sadistic secret Britton was hiding beneath his public persona as a crocodile expert and conservationist.

Secret Life

Based on evidence from Telegram conversations, it appears that Britton had developed a disturbing sexual obsession with animals from a young age. He began sexually abusing horses when he was just 13 years old.

I vaguely remember being interested in animals before then, but that’s when it got sexual. I started fence jumping when I was 13 or 14 and molesting horses. (21)

By 2014, his sadistic sexual interests had expanded to include dogs as well. In one conversation, Britton admitted to having suppressed these urges for a time, but stated:

I let it out again, and now I can’t stop. I don’t want to. (21)

Over time, Britton began manipulating other dog owners into surrendering their pets to him. He would scour websites like Gumtree Australia, where owners were often reluctantly rehoming their dogs due to work or travel constraints. Britton would set alerts to be notified whenever a new dog was listed, and would quickly reach out to the owners, building a rapport and spinning sob stories to gain their trust and obtain custody of the animals.

If former owners reached out to Britton for an update, he would tell them that the dogs were thriving in his care, even sending them old photos and fabricating false narratives. In reality, every single dog that Britton ‘rehomed’ was subjected to unimaginable torture, rape, and ultimately, death. He callously referred to the dogs as ‘fuck toys’ and carried out his heinous acts in a specially outfitted shipping container that he called his ‘torture room’.

In one instance, Britton sent the previous owners of a dog named Wolf photos claiming the animal was doing well and “enjoying her vacation”, when in fact it had already been sexually abused, tortured, and killed.

In September 2021, Britton acquired a dog named Kiki from an ill woman who could no longer care for her, assuring the family that Kiki would have a wonderful life on his five-acre property.

I live on a five-acre block in Humpty Doo, no other dogs too so she’d get the best of both worlds. I haven’t had a dog since my last girl died a few months ago but I miss her and need another companion. I can help you out by offering her a great home.

Tragically, Kiki did not even survive the week in Britton’s twisted care. Britton had taken Kiki and two other large dogs named Rose and Marylou to his torture room and filmed himself raping and torturing them until they died.

Despite Britton’s claims to other dog owners that he did not have his own dogs, this was not the case. He actually owned two Swiss Shepherd dogs, named Ursa and Bolt, who even had their own Instagram page set up by Britton himself.

Ursa & Bolt

Although Britton stated in a Telegram chat that, “My own dogs are family and I have limits”, he did in fact abuse Ursa and Bolt over the ten years prior to reaching out to other dog owners on Gumtree. Britton openly admitted:

I only badly mistreat other dogs… I have no emotional bond to them. They are toys pure and simple. (6)

In the 18 months leading up to his arrest, Britton tortured at least 42 dogs, tragically killing 39 of them.

Britton consistently filmed himself torturing and sexually exploiting the dogs he’d acquired from Gumtree before uploading the footage online. His abuse took place either in secluded locations around Darwin’s outer suburbs or on the grounds of his property, including a shipping container he had designated as his torture room. There were at least 15-20 confirmed videos of zoosadism that he had created.

The disturbing titles that have been given to these videos indicate the level of disturbing content they contain. They include ‘Ballboy Beating’ where he beat two male dogs in the testicles before killing them; ‘Blade Rape’ where he raped a dog with a razor; ‘Penis Rip’ where he ripped off the genitals of a male dog; ‘Hung and Gutted’ where he strangled, hung, and disembowelled two dogs; ‘Piss Dogs’ where he urinated on two dogs before beating them; and ‘Luna’ a 22-second video where he pokes a Pitbull in the eye with a knife.

According to messages from a Reddit user who was one of the first to voice concerns, Britton had a collection of highly disturbing photographs depicting roasted dog genitalia and meat, as well as a basket filled with the bodies of dogs he had killed. Additionally, he had a meme image of himself with his penis inserted into a severed dog’s head, accompanied by a caption that read, “When your dog has something stuck in its mouth and you tryna get it out”.

He used two Telegram accounts to interact with individuals who shared his twisted mindset. He went by the aliases ‘Monster’ and ‘Cerberus’ to conceal his identity. He used the Monster account with the sole purpose of engaging in conversations with like-minded people and discussing his kill count, whereas the Cerberus account was used to upload and disseminate the images and recordings he had produced.

Under his Monster pseudonym, Britton would provide advice on how to obtain dogs to kill and the best ways to deceive their owners. His recommendations included appearing friendly and genuine, avoiding appearing creepy, and having a decent sob story such as one’s own dog having died. In one instance, he told another Telegram user:

Most people want to know you’re a good person and the dog is going to a good home, it’ll have space to play, you’ll take it for walks, it might live in the house, etc. Telling them you want a new family member after your old dog died from cancer last year hardly ever fails. (2)

Britton also described how his disturbing fantasies dated back to his childhood. He recalled being “sadistic to small animals” when he was around 7 or 8 years old, and though he had repressed those tendencies, they resurfaced in his fantasies during his 20s and 30s.

When later asked whether he felt nervous the first time he “snuffed a dog”, Britton acknowledged that he was indeed nervous. However, he said the regret passed quickly, and he went on to kill another dog a week later, this time without any remorse. He then continued this pattern, killing multiple dogs in succession.

The first time? Yeah, I guess I was. I mean, I definitely was. And there was some regret afterwards even, but it passed quickly, and I did another a week later. And that one I did not regret. And then another, and another etc. (10)

Britton used mobile phones and tripod-mounted cameras to film much of the abuse. He typically went to great lengths to avoid revealing his own identity or location in the videos, editing them to obscure any identifying features.

However, one specific video he uploaded, titled ‘1 Bitch 9 Pups (1b9p)’, ended up being his undoing. A single piece of evidence from that video ultimately gave away his identity and exposed him as the sadistic monster he truly was.

Adam Britton

1 Bitch 9 Pups

Recorded in November 2021, the video ‘1 Bitch 9 Pups’ is a compilation of 10 separate clips, each lasting between 30 seconds and 3 minutes. In these videos, Britton is shown systematically killing nine puppies, aged 2 to 3 weeks, as well as their 10-month-old Pitbull-mix mother. The individual video segments were later combined into a single 15-minute video after it was leaked to online gore sites.

Britton filmed the disturbing footage in a forest near Darwin, Australia, not very far from his home. Throughout the videos, Britton remains completely nude and silent, with his face, identity, and location never revealed.

In each video, Britton would carry one of the puppies over to a log at the centre of the frame and then sadistically kill it using a variety of tools, including a kitchen knife, a handheld drill, a rusty handsaw, and a hammer. Britton also appears to have experienced sexual gratification from the acts of violence, masturbating over one puppy and ejaculating on another.

Britton forced the mother dog to eat a couple of her own puppies during this, killing them in front of her as she tried to lick their fatal wounds clean, possibly trying to help her pups. He finally urinated in her mouth, wrapped duct tape around her muzzle and legs, beat her, and placed three of her dead pups inside a hole he had cut in her before beating her again.

The footage of the killings is in high resolution, and some of the video clips had a few scenes skipping out, implying that some of the puppies were likely tortured for longer than what was recorded.

Catching A Monster

Towards the end of 2021, rumours began circulating on gore and shock forums about a video that was significantly more disturbing and shocking than any other. This occurred after someone had gained access to a private Telegram chat on zoosadism and discovered the videos, subsequently uploading them to a gore website. These videos were then shared on a more well-known gore platform, allegedly with the intention of identifying the individual responsible for the videos by raising awareness about their existence.

The infamy of the video quickly spread across the internet. The Reddit user Mushrooms4 was one of the first to raise concerns. Online sleuths, furious by the video’s content, then began closely examining every frame, searching for any clues that could reveal Britton’s identity.

In March 2022, a breakthrough occurred when an online user spotted a distinctive orange dog leash from the Darwin Council in the background, bearing the words ‘Great pets start with you’. This discovery eventually led the sleuths to Australia, where the name Adam Britton was first mentioned.

The footage was then emailed to the NT Animal Welfare Branch, who in turn passed the information on to the police. This sparked the launch of Operation Haine, a joint investigation by the NT Police and the Australian Federal Police’s Anti-Child Exploitation Team. In April 2022, a search warrant was executed at Britton’s home in McMinns Lagoon, on the outskirts of Darwin.

Police seized 44 items including computers, mobile phones, cameras, external hard drives, tools, weapons, dog paraphernalia, and sex toys during the investigation.

Investigators discovered severed dog limbs in a freezer, a decomposing puppy in a pond, and a severed dog head on a neighbouring property.

They also found 15 child abuse image files on Britton’s laptop, which he had obtained online. This included a toddler being forced to engage in bestiality. Some of these files were apparently shared with Britton by another Telegram user who went by the name Clark Kent, offering to send him a video of a baby being abused. In response, Britton wrote:

Curious to see that one. I mean generally, it’s not my thing, but sometimes you know… ;). (10)

Adam Britton was arrested.

Legal Proceedings

In April 2023, Britton was charged with 63 offences, including bestiality, animal cruelty, and possession of child abuse material. The trial commenced the following month at the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. Over several months, the prosecution presented detailed evidence, including graphic videos showing the abuse, expert testimonies analysing the material, and statements from investigators. Expert witnesses, such as veterinarians testified about the impact of Britton’s actions on the animals, and psychologists discussed his psychological profile.

The crown prosecutor, Marty Aust, outlined numerous instances of animal torture and sexual exploitation that occurred between November 2020 and April 2022. The court heard that Britton had a “sadistic sexual interest” in animals, particularly dogs, dating back to at least 2014, and that his “deliberate and planned” conduct resulted in the intentional killing of at least 39 animals. Mr Aust argued that Britton’s actions involved significant planning, including the use of multiple cameras, tripods, and efforts to conceal his identity. He stated that the footage showed Britton’s “extreme pleasure and enjoyment” in committing these acts and expressed concerns about him continuing his crimes and the need to consider the prospects of rehabilitation and the protection of the community.

In August, Britton’s defence team presented arguments aimed at reducing the severity of his sentence. They cited Britton’s mental health issues and personal history as factors to consider.

Britton’s lawyer, who requested to remain anonymous due to threats made against her, requested the judge review a new report, which indicated that Britton had received nearly 30 hours of treatment by a prison psychologist. The lawyer claimed this showed Britton now felt remorse for his crimes. They argued that remorse and insight into one’s actions are signs of rehabilitation potential, and these factors often evolve with treatment over time.

Britton’s team told the court he had been affected by paraphilia throughout the two-year period when his crimes occurred. Paraphilia refers to an intense, recurring sexual interest in uncommon objects, situations or behaviours. Britton’s lawyer said, “This particular condition is exceptionally taboo in most societies and the court can and I hope would, accept that that would have been a very difficult thing to grow up with and learn to manage into adulthood”.

When this was mentioned in court, a visibly upset Britton wiped away tears. Britton acknowledged he had been struggling with a rare paraphilic disorder for much of his life, and that shame and fear had prevented him from seeking the proper help he needed earlier.

The prosecution on the other hand contended that Britton was still able to rationally determine whether to act on his paraphilic interests. “With the incitement and the encouragement of other like-minded persons, he has offended in a way that’s almost beyond description in terms of its significant depravity”, argued Marty Aust.

Chief Justice Grant questioned how any psychiatric evidence could reduce Britton’s moral culpability, stating, “A serial killer can’t say, for example, ‘My moral culpability is reduced because I suffer from psychopathy’. I just can’t see where the evidence is going here”.

In September 2023, Britton pleaded guilty to 56 charges related to bestiality and animal cruelty, as well as four counts of possessing or distributing child abuse material. Although the case did not proceed to a full trial due to his guilty plea, the court still thoroughly reviewed all the evidence to determine an appropriate sentence.

After pleading guilty to all charges in the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Michael Grant warned the courtroom the details of Britton’s offences could only be described as grotesque cruelty and have the potential to cause nervous shock. In a rare move, the Chief Justice even excused the security officers and sheriffs from the courtroom while the facts of the case were presented on the record.

As the disturbing details were read aloud, some members of the public rushed out of the courtroom, while others watching from the gallery cried and mouthed insults at Britton. At times, Britton hung his head and reached for tissues, apparently visibly affected by the gravity of his crimes.

Britton wrote a letter from prison, which his lawyer presented in court. In the letter, Britton apologised for his demeaning crimes. He took full accountability for the pain and trauma he had caused and promised to pursue long-term treatment. Britton also expressed deep remorse for the pain and trauma he had caused to innocent animals, as well as to his family, friends, and members of the community.

“I will find a way towards redemption”, he wrote.

Letter written by Adam Britton read out in court

Justice Grant stated that Britton’s offences exhibited a level of depravity and reprehensibility that is completely beyond ordinary human understanding and comprehension. He said that Britton’s decision to begin and continue these unspeakable acts, as a mature and well-educated person, stemmed from evil motivation and intention, rather than impaired mental functioning.

The judge noted that on each occasion, the violence inflicted on the animals was severe and usually prolonged, and their suffering was indescribable. Furthermore, Justice Grant said Britton’s modus operandi involved devious and carefully premeditated planning, with each killing being staged as a deliberate production.

The judge agreed with the senior Crown prosecutor’s submission that the pleasure Britton derived from inflicting this torture was “sickeningly evident” from the recorded material. Britton’s criminal conduct was further compounded by the fact that he not only recorded the grotesque harm he was inflicting on the animals, but he would then revisit those videos for his own sexual gratification and share them with other deviants.

Justice Grant expressed no doubt that Britton would have continued this conduct had he not been arrested by the police.

You had no intention of stopping and you would not otherwise have stopped. (21)

On August 8th, 2024, 53-year-old Adam Britton was sentenced to 10 years and 5 months in prison, with a non-parole period of six years. His sentence was backdated to his arrest in April 2022. He was also banned from purchasing animals and having them on his property for the rest of his life.

Including time already served, Britton could be eligible for parole in September 2028.

Aftermath

Other Members

This investigation has shown that Adam Britton was not the only individual involved in animal cruelty, and there were other members of his zoosadist community. Unfortunately, it is highly likely that there are numerous other similar communities of like-minded individuals.

Lucas Russell VanWoert (Graves)

In 2022, as part of Operation Haine, detectives investigating Britton identified 25-year-old Lucas Russell VanWoert from Ohio in the United States as one of the Telegram users who had shared disturbing animal abuse content with Britton.

On September 26th, 2022, authorities searched VanWoert’s residence in Celina and seized several electronic devices. It was discovered that between November 2020 and onwards, Britton and VanWoert had exchanged 705 photos and videos depicting animal abuse, including recordings of VanWoert sexually assaulting and torturing at least four dogs inside the sleeper cabin of a tractor-trailer. VanWoert had shared these disturbing materials with Britton on Telegram under the alias ‘Graves’, and detectives were able to trace the filming location to a Michigan truck stop, leading to his identification. His visible face and distinctive sun-shaped arm tattoo in some footage aided in his recognition.

Despite the evidence against him, VanWoert was not arrested during the property raid but later voluntarily confessed to sexual acts, beatings, and dog strangulation at a former workplace in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also admitted to disposing of the dog’s body in a dumpster.

Detectives also discovered child exploitation videos involving prepubescent children on VanWoert’s electronic devices. He was charged with creating ‘crushing’ videos, which depict animals being stomped on or impaled to satisfy a sexual fetish, and distributing obscene material.

On May 30th, 2024, Lucas Russell VanWoert was sentenced to 97 months in prison and 15 years of supervised release for possession and transportation of child sexual abuse material, transportation of obscene materials, and creating an animal crush video.

In November 2022, VanWoert’s 32-year-old wife, Heather Marie VanWoert, was arrested in Ohio and faced 12 charges related to animal torture.

Lucas Russell VanWoert

Jaden Young Korse (Gorvaged)

Jaden Young Korse, a 24-year-old from Kentucky, was exposed by Daily Mail Australia for his involvement in editing Britton’s disturbing videos before they were published online.

Britton met Korse in 2021 on Telegram. Korse called himself ‘Gorvaged’, and he and Britton bonded over their shared obsession with animal cruelty.

Korse actively assisted Britton in publicising his depraved videos. In some of these videos, Britton held up signs that said ‘Gorvaged’ as an apparent way of thanking Korse for editing his twisted content. It was also Korse who helped Britton create the anonymous ‘Cerberus’ profile to release this disturbing material.

However, by the time Korse and Britton were eventually identified in April 2022, Korse had passed away the previous year from an accidental fentanyl overdose at the age of 24 and couldn’t be brought to justice. He had struggled with addiction since the age of 13.

Jaden Young Korse

After Korse’s death, Britton encouraged the group to continue making animal cruelty videos and dedicate them to their deceased friend, saying they should:

Continue as we did before, dedicate future groups to Gorv, and torture dogs (and other animals) so he has something to watch on Afterlife Telegram, of course. (9)

Erin

Erin and Adam were together for about 15 years before his arrest. Erin claims she was unaware of her husband’s criminal behaviour. She was often away from home, working as a ranger about three hours south of Darwin, or off on months’ long international zoology expeditions.

In an interview with 60 Minutes, she expressed shock and disgust upon learning of the bestiality charges against her husband, saying her brain was in denial. “It was so shocking, and I felt sick. I couldn’t speak”.

Erin explained that while she had no idea he would be capable of such crimes, he had been becoming increasingly withdrawn around that time and spending a lot of time on his computer. She explained they were living in separate rooms, and it had been several years since they were romantically together. She suspects the pets they had during that period may have also been victims of his crimes.

While incarcerated, Erin’s ex-husband wrote her disturbing letters, including a request for her to send him books about dogs. Erin found this deeply upsetting, feeling that he was trying to continue his disturbing fantasies even from prison.

Since his conviction, Erin has left the marriage and removed traces of her husband and former business partner from her online presence.

Conclusion

Adam Britton was a sexual sadist who inflicted torture and rape upon helpless animals that could not consent to his abusive actions. The owners who had entrusted their pets to him were unaware of the horrific truth about what he was doing to them.

Britton’s crimes not only harmed the animals he victimised but also deeply impacted their owners and the people who knew him. His colleagues and friends were left questioning how they had failed to recognise the warning signs. However, the greatest betrayal was towards his own wife, who now must live with the knowledge of her former husband’s heinous crimes. Thankfully, Britton did not have any children, otherwise, the impact could have been significantly more far-reaching.

Britton utilised a public, almost celebrity-like persona to conceal his true, depraved nature. People trusted him, and he exploited that trust to manipulate them into giving him access to their beloved pets. His crimes were calculated and premeditated, and his arrogance even led him to believe he could teach others to emulate his despicable acts. His goal was to create the ultimate shock video, but ultimately, it was this arrogance that was his downfall.

The prospect of Britton being released back into society is deeply concerning, as he derives pleasure from inflicting pain and is a master manipulator. Without proper treatment, he is likely to continue his pattern of abuse and exploitation upon his release. While he may never work in a professional capacity again, his expertise and training could enable him to skilfully evade detection in the future.

Britton was accused of offences that dated back to 2014. At that time, he would have been in his 40s, but there are likely more crimes that have not yet been uncovered. Notably, he had previously admitted to sexually abusing horses when he was 13 years old. These known criminal acts were probably just the start of a more extensive pattern of unlawful behaviour, and what he was charged with was likely just the tip of the iceberg.

The existence of individuals like Britton, who often have connections to other abusive behaviours such as paedophilia, is a terrifying reality. While Britton may not have physically abused children, his arrogance and desire to ‘touch the untouchable’ could have led him to involve them in his crimes.

However, this case also serves as a testament to the positive impact that internet sleuthing can have in exposing and bringing to justice those who perpetrate such heinous acts.

While some have called for Britton to be subjected to extreme punishments, the focus should remain on ensuring that he receives the appropriate treatment and is prevented from harming any more victims. At the same time, it is understandable that there are strong emotions and demands for retribution.

So the question is, can Adam Britton be rehabilitated, or should he just be fed to the dogs?
